Hi there from Jamin at Wing It Disc Golf.
We are working on making our first disc and thought it might be fun to let you all come along for the ride. This way we can all learn as we go.
One of the first hurdles we had to overcome was picking a name for our new business. Eric and I agree on a lot of things, but it took us a while to agree on a good name. We came up with a lot of good options and were back and forth on it a good bit. Wing It was always a favorite of both of ours and ended up sticking. We liked it because it describes us! Neither of us are professional disc golfers. We are both just figuring things out (though Eric has been playing longer than me). So what are we going to do? We’re just going to wing it!
After picking a name there seems like a million different things you’ve got to do. Get the website set up and write your first blog post (check) among other things, but this site isn’t about starting a business but a disc golf company. So I’ll focus on that.
The next thing we needed to do was get a 3D model of our first disc so we could get it off to the plastic company. The plastic company we decided to go with is Freeform Polymers. Freeform Polymers is a local company. They have a great reputation and a lot of experience with plastic injection molds, but like us they haven’t ever made a disc golf disc before. Seems like a match made it heaven. We wanted our first disc to be a straight flying driver (Neutral). That’s what we want, and that is the model we went with, but only time will tell how it turns out. Different types of plastics can made a big difference in how a disc will fly. We won’t know how it actually turns out until we have a chance to go throw our first disc around at one of the disc golf courses here in the valley.
So, at this point, we have our name, we have our model, we are now waiting for the mold and the first disc to be made! It’s an exciting process, one I never thought I would ever be involved with. We’ve talked to Freeform Polymers and are hoping to be able to be there when our first disc is done! So hopefully we can have some cool pictures to share with you all next time, but until then, this is Jamin, just winging it!
Sounds like fun, guys! I can’t wait to see what comes from your experience.
