Wing-It 101: More Discs to Disc-us

Back for another Blog post!  It’s been a while, I hope you have all been enjoying the summer as we have and that you got some good disc golfing in during it!

Autumn is officially here and with that, we’ve been reflecting on how things have been going with our Stratosphere disc.  Reviews have been coming in and we’ve been really happy with what you have all been saying about the Stratosphere.  We’ve seen a lot of really positive feedback in all three areas of what’s important when it comes to a disc, the look, the feel, and the throw.

The Look:
We knew that these discs are good-looking discs.  When they run a batch of these for us locally here in Northern Utah, they have someone standing there putting in different colors of plastic as the discs are made.  Because of that, we are able to get some really cool, really unique coloring styles on our discs.  We are very happy with how they are turning out.  We’ve had people say they look like candy, and they are definitely eye candy for sure.

The Feel:
We knew we liked the feel of the Lift plastic and we were hoping you all would like it too, and it hasn’t disappointed.  The first run of the discs had a little bit of a fringe around the rim, but we talked to our manufacturers and they were able to fix it (learning process).  The Lift plastic has a nice feel to it, almost a ‘grippy’ feel, and it’s high quality and durable.  We couldn’t have asked for better.

The Throw:
The Stratosphere is getting compliments all over about how well it throws.  People love it!  We’ve had several long-time players that are turning to the Stratosphere as their “go-to disc”.  At the same time, it’s an easy enough disc to throw that it’s great for beginners or casual players as well.

Overall we are very happy with how the Stratosphere has turned out.  So, what’s next?

We currently have 2 discs in the works right now.

The Driver:
We have a new long-distance high-speed driver in the works.  We are looking at a speed 12 that will be understandable enough to still be a good choice for newer players.  The mold is being finished up right now.  We’ve had to make a few tweaks from the original mold because the rim came to more of a point than is allowed.  Below you can see a picture of our prototype disc and the tool that they check the rim with.  They stick the rim into the notch on the right side of the tool and if the rim hits the back of the notch it’s not sloped enough.  If the rim catches on the top and bottom of the notch and doesn’t touch the back it’s sloped enough.  So, with that in mind, we are bringing the top up a bit and we’ll probably add a little more slope to the bottom edge.

The Midrange:
The second disc we are working on is going to be a midrange disc.  We are actually using the top half of the mold for the Stratosphere and just making a new bottom half of the mold.  This will change the rim, making these new discs midrange.  Because we are using the same top this new midrange will have the same diameter as the Stratosphere and we are going to try for around 170-176 grams for the weight. The plan is to make it more neutral to slightly overstable when it’s thrown.  We don’t have any working prototype on this one yet (so no pictures yet) but we will hopefully have more information on it soon.

Currently, the plan is to use the Lift plastic for all three of our discs.  We are excited to be adding these two new discs to the Wing It family.  We are hoping to have both of them ready for release at the beginning of 2023.  Just in time for you to give them a try for your 2023 disc golf season!
